Maria is a Registered Psychotherapist with a Master’s in Counselling Psychology. Maria is experienced in working with children, youth, adults, and families. She worked for a number of years at Reach out Center for Kids (ROCK), as well as Halton Women’s Place (HWP), and Halton Multicultural Center (HMC).
She also has experience with different therapy settings, such as individual therapy sessions, family therapy and group therapy. For the last 3 years, Maria has also been working as a mental health consultant at a private elementary and middle school.
Maria takes a client centered strength-based approach in working with clients in an open, genuine, and collaborative way and values the therapeutic relationship as a major contributor to addressing difficulties and challenges. Maria believes that individuals are the experts to their own stories and is passionate to help them find their inner resources and skills. In her work, Maria embraces a Narrative Therapy practice in aiming at connecting people to their preferred ways of being.
Maria can assist individuals and families with different challenges such as anxiety, depression, self-esteem, emotional awareness and emotional regulation, social difficulties, and family related problems, She can help clients become aware of how systems and the environment can contribute to their existing challenges.
Maria takes a holistic eclectic approach in her work and uses evidence-based approaches such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavioural Therapy (DBT), Narrative Therapy and Trauma informed practices. She uses elements of drama and play-based therapy when working with children. She has experience in working with parents and other caregivers to assist children work through emotion coaching and other challenges.
Upon request, Maria can provide faith-based therapy for Muslim clients and can provide services in English as well as Arabic.
